Dumitrescu Sets School Standard in the Pentathlon at Day 1 of Akron Invite

AKRON, Ohio - Coming into the meet, Kent State Director of Track and Field Bill Lawson was hoping sophomore Diana Dumitrescu would solidify for provisional qualifying pentathlon point total by 30-50 points. She not only achieved that mark, she gave herself some extra breathing room.
Dumitrescu captured the overall pentathlon title with 4,016 points, almost 300 more than her nearest competitor to lead the KSU contingent of combined athletes on Friday night (Feb. 12) at the Akron invite.
The 4,016 points by Dumitrescu is the fourth best point total in the nation this seasonand was just 59 points short of an automatic qualifying mark. She also became the first KSU athlete to surpass the 4,000-point mark in the event, breaking Aja Farris' 2001 record by 110 points.
Freshman Dexter Shreve and sophomore Ruben Belen are fifth and 10th, respectively, after four events in the heptathlon with 2,792 and 2,634 points respectively.
Among pentathlon events, Dumitrescu captured the shot put title by almost five feet with a distance of 43'-07.25" (13.29 meters). She also took second in the high jump (5'-5.25", 1.66 meters) and long jump (19'-2", 5.84 meters) and took third in the 60 meters hurdles (8.75) and the 800 meter run (2:29.53).
In the heptathlon, Shreve took second in the 60 meters with a time of 7.20 while placing fourth in the long jump with a distance of 21'-9" (6.63 meters). Belen took third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6'-5.0" (1.96 meters).
The final day of the Akron invite resumes tomorrow beginning with the heptathlon at 9 a.m.
