CLEVELAND — Kent State senior free safety Brian Lainhart (Cincinnati, Ohio) was a member of the recently released Phil Steele's Preseason All-America fourth team, while the Golden Flashes placed 16 players on 2010 Preseason All-Mid-American Conference teams.
The Flashes tied with Temple for the most selections in the conference. The All-American and All-MAC squads will be included in the Phil Steele's 2010 College Football Preview issue which is slated to hit newsstands June 8.
In 2009, Lainhart became the first Golden Flash defensive back to earn first team All-MAC honors since Jamie Howell in 1988. He led the MAC and was tied for fourth nationally with seven interceptions, one off the school season record. He also finished among the MAC leaders in fumbles forced (2nd, 4), passes defended (T-5th, 11) and tackles (17th, 87). Lainhart will head into his senior season with 15 career interceptions — tops among active players in the country and four shy of the school record.
Joining Lainhart on the first team were senior middle linebacker Cobrani Mixon (Cincinnati, Ohio) and junior punter Matt Rinehart (Dover, Ohio) — all of whom were first-team All-MAC selections in 2009 — and junior cornerback Josh Pleasant (Germantown, Md.).
The Flashes were represented by on the second team by two-time All-MAC running back Eugene Jarvis (Pittsburgh, Pa.), who was granted a sixth-year of eligibility this winter, sophomore wide receiver Tyshon Goode (Syracuse, N.Y.) and 2009 second-team All-MAC defensive end Monte Simmons (Swissvale, Pa.).
Senior defensive lineman Quinton Rainey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore quarterback Spencer Keith (Little Rock, Ark.) were members of the third team, while senior outside linebacker Dorian Wood (Austell, Ga.) garnered a spot on the fourth team.
The Golden Flashes also had a half-dozen players earn honorable mention honors: junior center Chris Anzevino (Warren, Ohio), senior kick returner Anthony Bowman (Detroit, Mich.), sophomore kicker Freddy Cortez (Fort Meade, Fla.), senior strong safety Dan Hartman (Leavittsburg, Ohio), senior punt returner Leneric Muldrow (Greenville, N.C.) and senior defensive end Zach Williams (Erie, Pa.).
