KENT, Ohio – This summer has been a busy season for Kent State women's golf, as players have faired well in various off-season tournaments.
Senior Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) recently competed in a regional qualifier for the 2011 U.S. Amateur, but her four-over 76 prevented her from qualifying for the U.S. Amateur, which will be held at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I., Aug. 8-14.
Morrow had a strong showing at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship at Bandon, Ore., where she advanced to match play. Morrow dropped her first-round matchup to defending champion Emily Tubert, 4 & 2.
Incoming freshman Jennifer Ha (Calgary, Alberta) tied for 16th in a field of 66 at the prestigious Rolex Tournament of Champions at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. June 27-July 1. The Tournament of Champions is considered by most as one of the biggest events in junior golf.
Ha fired a one-over 73 during her third round, finishing with a 75-74-73-79=301 for the tournament. Of note, Ha finished one stroke in front of Kyung Kim, who participated in the 2011 U.S. Women's Open.
Two weeks ago, Ha captured the CN Future Links Western Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka, Alberta, with a four-stroke victory aided by a four-under 67 during the second round. It was her second tournament win in as many weekends, as Ha won the Alberta Junior Girls Championship with a six-under 282, winning by 18 strokes.
