PHILADELPHIA - Kent State sophomore defensive lineman Roosevelt Nix was one of 65 players named to the Bednarik Award Watch List Tuesday by the Maxwell Football Club. The Bednarik Award has been presented to the nation's top defensive player since 1995.
Nix is only one of seven players on the list from a non-BCS school and is the lone representative for the Mid-American Conference. The other non-BCS players include Tanner Brock (TCU), Tank Carder (TCU), Vinny Curry (Marshall), Jonathan Massaquoi (Troy), Billy Winn (Boise State) and Korey Williams (Southern Miss).
A former standout at Penn and with the Philadelphia Eagles, Chuck Bednarik is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame's Class of '69 and the NFL Hall of Fame's Class of '67.
Nix was recently named to the Consensus Draft Services FBS preseason All-American team's honorable mention defense. He was also recently named to Blue Ribbon's forecasted All-Mid-American Conference Team for the 2011 season.
In 2010, he became the first true freshman ever to be named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native led the MAC with 20 tackles for a loss and his 10 sacks broke Kent State's freshman record. Nix also recorded 43 tackles, and did so while starting only one game. He was also named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.
