KENT, Ohio – Kent State took a little bit of a break from the normal doldrums of two-a-day practices by holding a kick scrimmage Monday afternoon.
"We got a lot of good work in and a lot of things to evaluate on film to see where we can make corrections and adjustments," says Kent State head coach Darrell Hazell. "I thought the guys really played hard."
The scrimmage featured solely special teams with no offense or defense. Different units were mixed and matched to throw players in with unfamiliar personnel groups.
"We'll learn from it and each unit will get better because of it," says Hazell. "Every time you get the field goal team out there you have to get points — that's the goal. We have to make sure we protect extremely well and then we bang it through the middle."
Speaking of senior first team All-MAC punter Matt Rinehart and junior kicker Freddy Cortez, Hazell didn't temper his expectations.
Kent State will host its annual Fan Experience Night Wednesday (Aug. 17) from 5-8 p.m. at Dix Stadium and the adjacent Field House. The event is free and open to the public and includes a chance to win the opportunity to call plays at the end of the scrimmage that evening. Kent State Athletics will also be collecting donations to benefit the Alabama Tornado Relief Fund.
The Flashes kick off the 2011 season Sept. 3 at Alabama, before returning home to host Louisiana Sept. 10 at DixStadium. Call (330) 672-2244 for season ticket information.
