Women's team Edges Toledo by 2.3 points for third consecutive title; men take second place with strong Saturday showing
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Kent State women's track and field team went to the wire to claim its third consecutive Mid-American Conference Women's Outdoor Championship Saturday, as the team's fourth-place finish in the women's 4x400-meter relay was enough to eclipse Toledo for the team title.
The Kent State men moved up on Saturday as well, but the Golden Flashes were unable to catch Akron to finish second in the six-team event. Kent State notched 150 team points in their effort.
After the women's 200-meter dash, the third-to-last event on Saturday, Kent State took a 111.33-99 lead over Toledo on second and third place finishes by Shanequa Williams and Chanitta Westbrooks. But the Rockets regained the advantage by taking the top three spots in the women's 5,000-meter run to take a slim 132-129.33 lead.
Needing to beat Toledo by three points, Kent State's 4X400-meter relay team of Kayla Schoenle, Erica Hutson, Andreea Patrasc and Williams posted a time of 3:44.46 to take fourth, while the Rockets placed 10th. It was Williams' fourth sprint of the day, as she also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash and was part of the 4X100-meter relay team which also took fourth.
The Kent State women got a Saturday title from Penina Acayo in the triple jump (41-06.50), while teammate Keri Dantley had a personal-best 41-04.25 for second place.
On the men's side, Princeton Bryson was the men's 100-meter dash winner, crossing the line in 10.53.
Bryson also aided the men's 4x100-meter relay team to gold, as he joined Cody Seifert, Miles Dunlap and Brandon Bailey for a time of 40.66, the team's fastest time of the season.
The men's triple jump featured Kent State going 2-3-4, with Rob Falchi finishing second overall. Justin Bailey and Andrew Linebarger were close behind, earning the Golden Flashes 19 points.
After finishing first in the prelims, Brandon Bailey took second in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.91, the third-fastest in Kent State history.
Joshua Schmidt placed fourth in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.49.
