It's a short turnaround this week for the 19th-ranked Kent State's men's golf team as it travels to the Golf Club of Georgia for the U.S. Collegiate Championship.
The Golden Flashes didn't have long to overcome the sting of what they considered a disappointing third-place finish on Sunday in the final round of the three-day Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. By Wednesday they were on a flight to face one of the deepest fields in college golf.
The 15-team U.S. Collegiate Championship is Friday through Sunday on the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course.
"I hope we rebound from last week when we played well, got in position to win, then got a little sloppy at the end," said Kent State head coach Herb Page. "We have to get over that because this week we are in a field that has 10 teams ranked in the Top 25. It's a great field, a great challenge and a great tournament. What a way to end our year."
The three-day, 54-hole championship is held Friday-Sunday on the 7,017-yard course that was awarded "Best New Private Course in America" in 1991 by Golf Digest. Its 607-yard, par-5 11th hole was also rated as one of "America's Best 99 Golf Holes" by the magazine.
Following Sunday's final round, the Flashes will take the winter off until returning to action March 3-4 at the Davidson College Invitational in Wilmington, N.C.
"We'd like to have a strong finish to the fall portion of our schedule," said Page. "We've been making tons of birdies, but we've just had a few too many unforced errors and to this point that is what has kept us from winning tournaments. You can't make those same unforced errors this week against a field like this."
Joining No. 19 Kent State in Alpharetta this week is tournament host and No. 2-ranked Georgia Tech, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Stanford, No. 10 Washington, No. 14 Virginia, No. 17 UCLA, No. 25 Auburn, No. 26 Clemson, No. 40 Wake Forest, No. 44 East Tennessee State, No. 45 USC, No. 69 Duke, and No. 74 Iowa.
Kent State's lineup for this week will include seniors Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Kyle Kmiecik, sophomore Jake Troyer and freshman Josh Whalen.
The USCC will be webcast live TV-style coverage beginning at 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. It can been viewed on the official USCC website, or at new.livestream.com/2013uscc/webcast
