KENT, Ohio – Kent State (3-7) struggled to maintain its lead as 33 fouls gave way to 26 points for UMass (3-7) in a 61-69 loss for the Golden Flashes Tuesday night (Dec. 17).
The game was another back-and-forth battle for Kent State, with eight ties and eight lead changes. They held the lead for the majority of the opening 20 minutes, taking a 29-25 lead by the half.
But in the second, foul trouble harmed the home team. Starting center CiCi Shannon was forced to just eight minutes in the second while UMass was able to outscore Kent State 16-4 in the paint during that period. The Golden Flashes tried to comeback, as Amber Dunlap scored eight points in the final 4:14 on two three's and two foul shots, but the damage could not be undone.
Kent State did find success on the boards, grabbing 43 rebounds on the night. However UMass was able to get to the charity stripe 39 times where they made 66.7% of their attempts. They were also able to capitalize off 19 Kent State turnovers that resulted in 22 points.
Dunlap and Montia Johnson both finished with a team-high 14 points, including four shots from beyond the arc for Dunlap. Janae Peterson had the best game of her young career, finishing with nine points and seven rebounds. Fellow freshman Krista White had a strong showing in nine minutes on the court, collecting five points, an assist and two steals.
Kent State rounds out non-conference play Friday night (Dec. 20) when they take on St. Bonaventure at 7:00pm. They then have a break until January 4th when they begin Mid-American Conference play against Eastern Michigan. That game is also home in the M.A.C. Center.
