Women's 60-meter dash record falls as eight first-place finishes for Flashes in final competition before next weekend's MAC Championships.
KENT, Ohio—The Kent State track and field teams saw a school record broken for the second consecutive weekend at Saturday's Kent State Tune Up.
The meet featured athletes from 35 schools and served as final preparation for the Golden Flashes as they get set for next weekend's Mid-American Conference Championships. Several Flashes had standout performances, resulting in victories in eight events
The highlight of the meet happened halfway through the day in the finals of the women's 60-meter dash. After running the top time during prelims (7.57), junior Katie Reiser (Wayne, Ohio) sprinted her way into the record books by clocking a Kent State record 7.50 in the finals to claim first place. Shavae Wright, who ran a 7.51 in 2011, previously held the record. Junior Roseanne Erickson (Alexandria, Minn.) finished second in 7.59.
The women's 200-meter dash was dominated by the Flashes as they finished in the top three places. Junior Shanequa Williams (Akron, Ohio) won the race in 24.14, sophomore Chanitta Westbrooks (Cleveland, Ohio) clocked a 24.82 for second, and senior Olivia Hallstein (Long Island, N.Y.) took third with a time of 24.95.
That was the second win of the day for Williams, who clocked a 54.43 in the 400-meter dash earlier in the meet. Senior Melinda Sawnor (Rochester, N.Y.) finished in 56.30 for fourth place.
The women's team won a pair of field events. Senior Keri Dantley (Imperial, Pa.) recorded the sixth-best mark in school history to win the triple jump. Her mark of 40'-11.50" was more than two feet longer than the second place finisher. Erickson and junior Ann Marie Duffus (North Clarendon, Jamaica) took the top two spots in the long jump with distances of 19'-07.00" and 19'-06.75", respectively.
On the men's side, a pair of freshmen took top honors in field events. Jesse Oxley (Sugar Grove, Ohio) posted a mark of 16'-04.75" in pole vault and Cody Jones (Canton, Ohio) cleared 6'-09.00" to win the high jump.
Senior Brandon Bailey (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led Kent State in a strong performance in the men's 60-meter dash. Bailey clocked a 6.88 in the finals, narrowly edging freshman Wayne Gordon (Amherst, N.Y.), who finished in 6.89. Bailey's time ranks ninth in Kent State history while Gordon's is tied for tenth. Junior Laron Brown (Dayton, Ohio) ran a 6.92 for fourth place. It was a busy day of competition for Bailey, who finished third in both the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash.
Kent State will look to build off its performances at today's meet and have a strong showing at next weekend's MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women have won two of the last three conference crowns while the men have taken second place to years in a row.
