Flashes have strong opening day at All-Ohio Championships

ATHENS, Ohio – The Kent State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams turned in strong opening day performances at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio University's Goldsberry Track. With 41 points, the men stand second to Akron's 83 points in the eight-team field, while the women totaled 29 points for fourth place behind the host Bobcats who lead the 10-team field with 41 points.
Pacing the men's team was freshman Kevin Budge (Bowling Green, Ohio), who earned runner-up honors in the 10,000-meter run in 31 minutes, 34.63 seconds. Junior Andrew Goodwin (Celina, Ohio) also placed second in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:24.06.
In the field, sophomore Matthias Tayala (McDonald, Ohio) finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 63.19 meters.
On the women's side, the Golden Flashes received third place finishes from sophomores Roseanne Erickson (Alexandria, Minn.) in the long jump at 5.71 meters and Jackie Leppelmeier (McComb, Ohio) in the hammer throw at 59.16 meters.
Senior Sara Oczypok (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished second in the javelin throw at 46.60 meters.
Action resumes in Athens at 10 a.m. tomorrow (April 13) with the continuation of the men's and women's decathlon and heptathlon. The running events will largely be contested between 12:10 p.m. and 4:50 p.m.
