Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Excellence at Annual Devine Athletic Academic Banquet

KENT, Ohio – Over 200 Kent State student-athletes, athletic trainers and cheerleaders were recognized Sunday afternoon for academic excellence at the 30th annual Judith K. Devine Athletic Academic Honors Banquet held at the Kent Student Center Ballroom.
The academically elite of Kent State's student-athletes were honored for various academic honors. Specifically, student-athletes that had surpassed their sophomore year academically and had achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 earned the Academic Athletic Excellence Award.
Twenty-nine student-athletes, including seven freshmen, earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average during either the spring or fall semesters of the 2012 calendar year. Several student-athletes were also recognized for earning either the Mid-American Conference Commissioner's or Presidential Award (cumulative GPA over 3.5), were selected to Chi Alpha Sigma or a member of the Honors College.
Individually, Freddy Cortez of the football team was the Judith K. Devine Leadership Award honoree. The award is presented to a student-athlete who exhibits outstanding leadership both within and outside of athletic competition.
Spencer Keith (football) and Dustin Kilgore (wrestling) were co-recipients of the Merle Wagoner Award, which is given to the Kent State male student-athlete that best exemplifies athletics, academic and leadership achievement.
The Janet Bachna Award, which is presented to the Kent State female student-athlete who displays athletic, academic and leadership excellence, was awarded to women's track & field athlete Diana Dumitrescu.
Also, several student-athletes earned various scholarships. Softball's Michele Duffy and track & field's Hannah Fleck received the Lou Holtz Scholarship. Miles Dunlap of track & field was awarded the Robert C. Dix Athletic Scholarship. Tyler Buckwalter of the wrestling team earned the Karl Chesnutt Scholarship, and football's Will Johnson received the Learning Specialist Award.
