Kent State Finishes in Tie for Sixth in Strong Outing at Lady Buckeye Invite

Golden Flashes' Ha ties for third and beats three golfers ranked among the top 50 in the nation.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Kent State women's golf team ended the regular season finishing in a tie for sixth place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational at the OSU Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Flashes entered Sunday's final day of competition tied for sixth and maintained their place by shooting 314 to finish with a team score of 937 (314-309-314).
Sophomore Jennifer Ha (Calgary, Alberta) has played some of her best golf in recent weeks. Ha followed her runner-up finish at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate by tying for third place after a 4-over, 76 on Sunday. She added three birdies in the final round, giving her a total of 10 for the tournament. Ha's 225 (76-73-76) is her best score of the spring and two of her three best scores on the year have come in her last two tournaments.
Among those Ha finished ahead of were three golfers ranked among the nation's top 50 by Golfweek. Michigan State's Caroline Powers is ranked 16th, Purdue's Paula Reto 26th, and Northwestern's Hana Lee 50th.
Sophomore Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand) narrowly missed shooting 77 for the third straight round and finishing with a shot 6-over, 78 on Sunday. Hawe finished tied for 13th with a 232 for the tournament. Freshman Josée Doyon (Saint-Georges-de-Beauce, Quebec) tied for 22nd after a 7-over 79 in the final round.
Two freshmen played their best round of the tournament on Sunday. Natalie Goodson (Hudson, Ohio) improved by a stroke each round and tied for 49th with a 246 (83-82-81). Playing in just her second collegeiate tournament, Brynn Schumacher (Brecksville, Ohio) shot a career-best 87 in the final round of play.
Freshman Tess Fraser (Marysville, Ohio) returned to shoot an 82 on Sunday after wihtdrawing from Saturday's second round.
Kent State entered the day tied with Indiana, but the Hoosiers shot 312 to take fifth place. The Flashes bested Wisconsin by three stokes on Sunday to pull even with the Badgers. No. 27 Michigan State overcame No. 10 Purdue by shooting 298 on Sunday to take the team title. The Spartans (904) won by seven strokes.
Medalist honors went to No. 64 Laura Gonzalez (Purdue), who entered the final round atop the leaderboard and finished with a 5-over, 221 (73-73-75).
Kent State is back in action next weekend, April 26-28, at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championships in Nashport, Ohio. The Golden Flashes will aim capture their 15th consecutive MAC crown.
