MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Kent State kept the momentum going in the final round of the Minnesota Invitational on Tuesday (Sept. 17), closing out the event with a team win and an individual win for Jennifer Ha.
The victory marks the first in Head Coach Greg Robertson's Kent State coaching career.
"I was happy with the way the team played," said Robertson. "I challenged them a little bit and told them I was going to find out a lot about them in the final round and, sure enough, they came out in the final round and fought hard."
The Golden Flashes posted a 902 (+38) through 54 holes to beat Illinois by a stroke. They improved round-by-round, shooting a 306 in the opening followed by a 302. They ended with a tournament-low round of 294.
Ha shot a 76 and 71 on day one to find herself with the lead going into Tuesday. She heated up on the final 18, shooting a tournament low 68 (-4) to cap off a seven-stroke victory with a final score of 215 (-1). Ha had two birdies and an eagle on the final nine and led the field with 13 birdies in all. Her rounds of 71 and 68 were the lowest posted by anyone in the invitational.
"Not just winning it, but the way she won," said Robertson of Ha, "it's definitely going to help her confidence, and I think it's going to help the team's confidence, too."
Kent State also had help from Josée Doyon who tied for fourth after shooting a 224 (+8). Individually, Raksha Phadke finished in a tie for 14th place with a 230 (+14) and Natalie Goodson shot a total of 238 (+22) to finish tied for 37th. Taylor Kim's two rounds of 77 and 76 helped solidify the win for the Golden Flashes.
"It's good to start off the year with a win," Robertson said. "Now it's time to get back to work and keep making improvements."
The Golden Flashes hit the course again on September 27th-29th as part of the Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa. Log on to kentstatesports.com or follow @KentStWGolf on Twitter for all the updates.
