THE GAME
Kent State (5-18, 2-10 MAC) looks to keep on their current hot streak when Buffalo comes to town Wednesday night (Feb. 19) for a 7:00pm tip.
The Golden Flashes are coming off an impressive 57-48 road win over Western Michigan this past Sunday. The Broncos were able to start off on an 11-0 run, but a 4-for-4 three-point shooting performance by Larissa Lurken got the Flashes into the game. The two teams traded baskets back and forth in the second half before Kent State was able to go on a 15-1 run to end the game and secure the victory. Western Michigan struggled in the final minutes, as its last field goal came with five minutes remaining. On the other hand, Kent State sunk nine free throws to take the lead with 2:36 left and move on to the win. On the defensive end, they forced four turnovers in the final minute and a half. Lurken's 12-point first half on four from beyond the arc was enough to lead Kent State in scoring. Amber Dunlap followed her with nine points. Montia Johnson led the team with 12 rebounds. She also picked up six points, three steals and a block. CiCi Shannon kept on her season pace with three denials. As a team, a 20-for-24 effort at the line paved the way for a victory. The Flashes also won the rebound margin 40-31.
The beginning of February has been a big time for the Golden Flashes under Head Coach Danielle O'Banion. Kent State has started off both Februarys by securing their first conference win. Last year they fought hard on February 3rd in a 57-55 victory on the road at Ohio. This season they won February 2 versus Ball State.
Buffalo is led by Mackenzie Loesing and Kristen Sharkey, who are averaging 16.8 and 14.9 points per game, respectively. Sharkey also leads the team by averaging 8.9 rebounds. Christa Baccas has been a match for Shannon this season, blocking a total of 60 shots.
