PALM CITY, Fla. – Kent State's men's golf team shot 13-over-par 297 in Tuesday's final round to close out the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian in 13th place.
After beginning the last day at even par following rounds of 283 and 285 on Monday, the Golden Flashes slipped just one spot on the leaderboard while shooting 297 on a difficult day for scoring at the 7,076-yard Floridian Golf Club.
No. 4 Georgia Tech cruised to the team championship at 15-under par, eight shots better than runner up and No.3-ranked Oklahoma State. The Yellow Jackets were one of only two teams to break par on Tuesday in an elite field that included 11 teams ranked in the top-30.
"The wind howled, it rained off an on, and it was just a very tough day," said Kent State head coach Herb Page. "The course completely changed from the first two rounds, and we didn't handle it very well. We made too many big numbers, and you can't get away with that against these teams."
Senior Taylor Pendrith led the Golden Flashes by tying for sixth place individually at 4-under-par 209. He followed rounds of 72 and 67 on Monday by closing in a 1-under-par 70 that included six birdies.
"Taylor had an awesome week that should move him well up the individual rankings," said Page. "He was fantastic."
Senior Corey Conners finished in a tie for 42nd place at 5-over-par after rounds of 70-75-73–218. Kyle Kmiecik (71-76-76–223) rounded out Kent State's senior trio in a 59th-place tie at 10-over, while sophomores Kody Fry (11-over, 70-73-81–224) and Sebastian Bendsen (17-over, 82-70-78–230) finished in 62nd and 71st-place, respectively.
"It's frustrating right now because it's a hole here and a hole there where we would just make big numbers," said Page. If you look at the scores, Pendrith and Kmiecik both had triple bogeys. Kody Fry made two of them. It's frustrating. It doesn't feel like we are very far off, but his is also our third tournament of the spring and some of those should be eliminated by now."
Next up for the Golden Flashes is a trip to Texas A&M on April 5-6 for the Aggie Invitational at The Traditions in College Station.
"We need to play a lot of golf, so that is what we are going to do," said Page. "We'll get in a lot of rounds during the rest of spring break before we go to College Station."
