Men’s Track and Field Sits in Second After Day 1 of MAC Championships

ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State's men's track and field team sits in second place, with 22 points after day one of the Mid-American Conference Championships at the Goldsberry Track at Ohio University on Thurs., May 15.
Matthias Tayala defended his title in the hammer throw as he was crowned the 2014 champion in the hammer throw as he gained 10 points for the Golden Flashes Thursday. Tayala won the event with a mark of 69.94m (229' 5") on his way to setting the new MAC Championships meet record. Conor McCollough, of Kent State, held the previous meet record in 1983 with a mark of 66.78m (219' 1").
Reggie Jagers finished the hammer throw with a ninth place finish with a mark of 50.75m (166' 6").
Jesse Oxley tied for second at the championships with a height of 5.07m (16' 7.5") to gain seven points for the Flashes as Kyle Schlumbohm came in eighth, 4.47m (14' 8"), to get one point for Kent State.
Kyle Tywon completed the first five events of the decathlon in seventh place with a total of 3,523 points. Tywon finished sixth in the 100-meter dash, 11.42, eighth in the long jump, 6.46m (21' 2.5"), ninth in the shot put, 11.33m (37' 2.25"), tied for fourth in the high jump, 1.93m (6' 4") and sixth in 400-meter dash (51.21).
Matt Kahl ran a personal-best in the 10,000-meter with a time of 30:35.63 picking up four points and finished fifth. Julian Meyer came across in 31:47.40 in 12th, for a personal-best.
Day two of the MAC Championships continue tomorrow, May 16th, with the men's decathlon at 10 a.m., the women's heptathlon starts at 10:30 a.m. as the rest of the events get underway at 1 p.m. with the women's long jump.
