The National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams Wednesday, which included Kent State at the No. 13 spot with a 3.159 team grade point average. The NWCA also released its Individual All-Academic Wrestling Team, featuring Golden Flash sophomore Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and freshman Stephen Suglio (Richfield, Ohio).Â
Also recently named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, McGuire earned his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships by finishing third in the 133-pound bracket of the MAC Championships. At 27-15, the speech pathology major finished second on the team in total victories. McGuire went 15-9 in dual meets, placed third at the Navy Classic and seventh at the Southern Scuffle. He also went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals.
Suglio placed in the top five at five different open tournaments this past season, including a runner-up finish at the Purple Raider Open. Competing at 197 pounds, the integrated science major finished 21-14 with five pins, six major decisions and two tech falls.
Kent State was one of three MAC teams to have multiple wrestlers on the NWCA All-Academic Team. The Golden Flashes also had the third highest team GPA among the nine MAC institutions.
The team grade-point average was determined using a system that includes 12 student-athletes from each program. A total of 10 of these came from the wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier.
Kent State completed its sixth straight season with an All-American. The Golden Flashes tied for third in the Mid-American Conference standings and will return each of its 10 starters for the 2014-15 season.
