
Track and Field: 8 Student-Athletes Earn Outdoor Academic All-MAC Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kent State's track and field programs had eight student-athletes be selected to the 2014 Outdoor Academic All-Mid American Conference Teams, announced Tues., July 8 by the conference office.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
A total of 62 Mid-American Conference student-athletes (40 women and 22 men) earned Academic All-MAC honors. Kent State's eight selections tied for the second most behind Eastern Michigan's 12 student-athletes. The Golden Flashes were made up of five women and three men athletes.
After winning their fifth straight outdoor title, and seventh straight MAC title, the women's team had a total of five nominees, which tied the most for a women's program (Kent State 5, Miami 5, Toledo 5).
On the women's side, the Golden Flashes that were selected to the Academic All-MAC team were: Dior Delophont (Nancy, France), Roseanne Erickson (Alexandria, Minn.), Paige Foster (Prior Lake, Minn.), Erica Hutson (Akron, Ohio), and Danniel Thomas (Westmoreland, Jamaica).
Delophont was the MAC Champion in the High Jump (1.82m / 5' 11.5") and the Triple Jump (13.08m / 42' 11") while she finished third in the Long Jump at 6.02m (19' 9"). Erickson was the MAC Champion in the Long Jump at 6.11m (20' 0.5"), and Thomas was the MAC Champion in both the Shot Put (16.82m / 55' 2.25") and the Discus (57.67m / 189' 2").
Delophont, Erickson and Thomas all competed at the NCAA Division I National Championships in Eugene, Oregon this season. While Delophont (high jump) and Erickson (long jump) competed in one event a piece, Thomas competed in two events, the shot put and the discus.
All three athletes earned All-American status as Thomas was a first team All-American in the discus, with a second place finish at 57.11m (187' 4") and earned second team All-American honors in the shot put with a ninth place finish, 16.79m (55' 1"). Delophont was a second team All-American with a 10th place finish in the high jump at 1.80m (5' 10.75"), while Erickson was a second team All-American in the long jump with a 11th place finish, 6.17m (20' 3").
Foster placed 20th in the 3000m Steeplechase at the MAC Championships (11:54.48), while she had a pair of second place finishes on the season; Akron Campbell Wright Open (2nd / 11:52.96) and the Ohio Open (2nd / 11:43.08).
Hutson finished her season with a third place finish at the MAC Championships in the 400m dash with a time of 55.01. She was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished fourth in 3:42.54.
On the men's side, Kent State saw Miles Dunlap (McDonald, Ohio), Andrew Goodwin (Celina, Ohio) and Jesse Oxley (Sugar Grove, Ohio) make the Academic All-MAC team.
Dunlap competed at the NCAA Division I National Championships in the 400-meter hurdles where he took 20th with a time of 52.60 in the preliminary round. Dunlap advanced to the national championships after a sixth place finish at the NCAA East Region Preliminary round in Jacksonville, Fla. with a time of 51.41. Dunlap finished the MAC Championships in second place in both the 400 hurdles and the 400m dash.
Oxley took home second place at the MAC Championships in pole vault with a height of 5.07m (16' 7.5") and went on to compete at the NCAA East Region Preliminary round.
Goodwin took home a fourth place and a sixth place finish at the MAC Championships as he was fourth in the 3000m Steeplechase (9:05.20) and sixth in the 5000m run (14:49.72).
Additionally to the eight Academic All-MAC selections, Hannah Fleck (Celina, Ohio), Corrine Gasaway (Tallmadge, Ohio), Tabitha Jacofsky (Brecksville, Ohio), Tori Meyer (Deshler, Ohio), Katie Reiser (Wayne, Ohio), Raquel Smiddy (Chardon, Ohio), Taylor Wickey (Medina, Ohio), Justin Bailey (Trenton, N.J.), Tyler Jones (Stow, Ohio) and Marteze Roper (Warren, Ohio) earned Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC status.
Other Academic honors achieved by Golden Flashes' this season were Dior Delophont and Jesse Oxley who were selected to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District First Team. After reaching the All-District teams, Delophont and Oxley were put onto the National Ballot where Delophont was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team.
Danniel Thomas will represent Jamaica at the Common Wealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23-Aug. 3rd and again at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athleteic Association (NACAC) Under-23 Games in Kamlopps, British Columbia, Canada, on Aug. 8-10. Thomas, will compete in both the shot put and discus throw at both games and will be joined by men's teammate Matthias Tayala, who will represent the USA at the NACAC Under-23 Games as he competes in the hammer throw.
