COLUMBUS, Ohio- Freshman Chase Johnson finished in second place at 1-under par 212 after the final round of the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at the Ohio State University Golf Club – Scarlet Course on Monday. As a team, the Golden Flashes ended the tournament in fourth with a 54-hole score of 22-over par 874.
The Buckeyes captured the team title with an 859 total after all five golfers finished in the top-25 for the invitational. Purdue finished second with an 871 and Troy placed third with an 873.
"We had a good day," said Director of Golf/Head Men's Golf Coach Herb Page. "The lesson of this week is what one shot means. The team is playing a little bit better every week. We are very close. We just need some help from some of the upperclassmen and it was good to see Taylor Zoller on track today."
Johnson, the Barberton, Ohio native, finished in second place, marking his second consecutive top-10 finish after he earned seventh at the Inverness Intercollegiate less than a week ago. Johnson shot a 1-under 70 in his final round today after sinking birdies on the fourth, sixth and 13th holes and finished with a three-round score of 1-under 212. Johnson was just two strokes behind Matt Green of Kansas State, who won the individual title with a 3-under 210.
"He is going to be something special," said Page on the play of rookie Chase Johnson. "He had an outstanding week and he had a great chance to win it. He made a double bogey in the final round but made a few great pars after that for a very solid performance."
Senior Taylor Zoller shot a 4-over 217 to tie for 11th in the standings, and freshman Ian Holt shot his best round of the tournament today (1+) to place 28th overall with a 9-over 222. Josh Whalen, playing as an individual, shot a 7-over 220.
Junior Sebastian Bendsen shot a 3-over 74 in his final round for a total of 12-over 225 good for 37th overall, and Spencer Dobbs went 18-over 231 for 51st.
The Golden Flashes will now prepare for the Bank of Tennessee hosted at Blackthorn Golf Course. The three-day tournament runs from Friday, Oct. 10 – Sunday, Oct. 12.
