
Miami Edges Women’s Soccer in Overtime

OXFORD, Ohio- Ashley Weathers scored in the 97th minute to lift the Miami women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops Kent State to 7-5-2 overall and 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference, while the RedHawks improved to 9-4-0 and 5-1 in the MAC.
The only goal of the match came with just three minutes left in the first overtime period as RedHawk freshman Ashley Weathers got one past Kent State goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald.
McDonald made five saves in goal for the Golden Flashes before Miami connected on the game winner.
The scoreless first period saw a 7-3 advantage in shots for Miami, including three on target, and a 2-1 lead in corner kicks.
Freshman defender Paige Culver had a nice look on goal for the Flashes in the 32nd minute as she one-timed toward the goal, but Miami goalkeeper Vic Maniaci was there to make the stop.
In the second period, Miami once again led in shots, 7-2, and ended regulation with a 14-5 advantage. Freshman Miranda Lambert fired a shot on goal in the 68th minute, but Maniaci made the save.
Both teams had two shots in the overtime period, as Miami came up with the golden goal at the 96:54 mark.
Culver, Jenna Hellstrom and Lambert recorded the only shots on goal for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State will be back at home next weekend, hosting both Bowling Green at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, and Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.
