Late Goals Lead Golden Flashes to 3-2 win over CMU
10/23/2015 7:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.- Goals scored by three different Golden Flashes gave the Kent State University women's soccer team a 3-2 win at Central Michigan (5-9-2, 4-4-1 MAC) at the CMU Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon. The victory moves the Golden Flashes to 10-5-2 and 6-3-0 in the Mid-American Conference, and was Kent State's first victory over the Chippewas since the 2006 season.
"It was a great road win for us," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "I am very proud of our commitment to keep fighting through all the challenges we faced today. We had a great team effort in finding a way to finish the game off for the three points."
The Golden Flashes seized an early lead, scoring in the eighth minute of the game. Sophomore Donavan Capehart (Orient, Ohio) crossed the ball into the box over to sophomore Hayden Pascoe (Belle Vernon, Pa.). Pascoe then passed the ball to the top of the 18-yard box over to sophomore Kristen Brots (Naperville, Ill.), who put the ball into the corner of the net.Â
The Chippewas were able to even the score when freshman forward Alexis Pelafas scored off a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Samantha Maher in the 42nd minute.Â
Kent State led the Chippewas 10-6 in shots at the intermission, but Central Michigan had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.  Â
The Golden Flashes came out of the half firing, and finally scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute when junior Abbie Lawson (Stow, Ohio) collected a loose ball and put one into an open goal. A little over a minute later, Pascoe headed the ball into back of the net to increase Kent State's lead to 3-1.  The goal was Lawson's first this season.
Central Michigan was able to cut its deficit to one in the 87th minute when Samantha Maher fired a shot over KSU goalkeeper Ashleah McDonald's (Langley, British Columbia) head. The Kent State defense was able to keep the Chippewas off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, and come away with the 3-2 win.
McDonald improves to 10-4-1 in net for the Golden Flashes and earned six saves in her 90 minutes tonight. Central Michigan rookie goalkeeper Zoie Reed tallied six saves and dropped to 5-7-1 on the year.
Kent State led the Chippewas in shots, 17-12, but lost the corner kick battle, 6-4.Â
The Golden Flashes will now take on the Toledo Rockets at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.Â
