Kent State Sweeps Past Cardinals into MAC Semifinals

ATHENS, Ohio – Kent State earned its third consecutive sweep by beating Ball State, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-23), in a Mid-American Conference Championship quarterfinal match Friday night at Ohio University's Convocation Center.
The Golden Flashes (20-9) advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2007 and will play the host Bobcats at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Senior Kelly Hutchison became the 12th player in Kent State history to record 1,000 kills with her first kill of the second set. The senior from Columbus, Ohio has enjoyed a breakout season with 381 kills and was named to the All-MAC First Team on Thursday.
Dominant performances at the pin by sophomore Kelsey Bittinger and Hutchison led the way for Kent State. Bittinger had a match-high 16 kills and only one error on 36 attempts for a .417 hitting percentage. Hutchison added 15 kills and had only three errors for a .400 hitting percentage. Junior Katarina Kojic finished with 42 assists.
The Flashes made plays all over the floor to hold the Cardinals to a .119 hitting percentage. Sophomore Challen Geraghty showed why she was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year with a match-high 21 digs. Senior Sarah Mills had 12 digs and Bittinger added 10 digs.
