KENT, Ohio – Career-highs from both forwards Jordan Korinek and Chelsi Watson guided Kent State (2-3) to a 73-59 win against Malone on Saturday afternoon.
Korinek, coming off her career-high in scoring in the previous game, started off Saturday's contest with a rebound and a three. The Golden Flashes' defense stifled the Pioneers, holding them to ten points in the opening quarter.
Leading 17-10 at the end of the first, Naddiyah Cross began the second by extending the lead after hitting a shot from beyond the arc. After missing the first 13 shots from three-point range, Malone connected on two in the waning minutes of the second quarter to inch closer to the lead. Kent State led 32-28 at the half.
Korinek stayed hot, reaching a new career-high in scoring in the third quarter. Larissa Lurken ended the third by connecting on an and-one to put the Flashes up by eleven, 53-42.
That lead would remain comfortable the rest of the way as Kent State cruised through the 4th quarter to the 73-59 victory.
The Golden Flashes outscored the Pioneers 48-26 in the paint and outrebounded 40-27 in the contest. Kent State made nearly half its shots in a 28-for-58 effort from field goal range. Malone fired off 27 threes but only sunk five.
Korinek ended with a new best of 28 points while Watson finished with her new high of 18. Korinek also led in rebounds with eight while Tyra James led the team with eight assists. Lurken also contributed with 12 points.
