The women's basketball team spent Thursday afternoon at Akron General Hospital leading up to the team's #VictorGame slated for Saturday.
At the hospital, the team toured the Breast Health Center, Cancer Center and had doctors and nurses talk to them about patient care and prevention. The students also learned about art therapy and spent part of the morning making a craft in understanding of how it can help patients cope.
The #VictorGame, sponsored by Akron General, is slated for this Saturday at 7 p.m. when Kent State hosts North Dakota State in the M.A.C. Center.
The game is an event to celebrate those who have tackled cancer victoriously. Kent State Head Coach Danielle O'Banion spearheaded the #VictorGame idea as she battled lymphoma during the 2014-15 season and is now cancer-free.
The Golden Flashes' all-time leading scorer and only woman to have her jersey retired, Bonnie Beachy, will serve as the honorary coach for the game. Beachy is a cancer fighter herself.
Fans in attendance are asked to sign ribbons at the game with their names or with the names of loved ones who have fought cancer. At the end of the contest, the ribbons will be added to a banner and fans can join in a postgame #VictorGame photo on the court. The first 1,000 people through the M.A.C. Center doors will receive a free t-shirt.
The game will air on Golden Flashes iHeart Radio and 640 AM WHLO with Dave Wilson providing the play-by-play. Live video and live stats will be provided at kentstatesports.com.
Kent State and North Dakota State have met just once before, last season in Fargo, with the Bison winning 74-68. NDSU is 2-4 this season with wins over College of Saint Mary and Valley City State. The Bison are averaging 66.2 points per game this year with 38.0 rebounds per game. They are led by Marena Whittle who is averaging 19.8 points and 8.0 rebounds. Briannna Jones is averaging a double-double this season with 10.7 points and 11.3 rebounds.
Tickets for Saturday's contest can be purchased online at kentstatesports.com or by calling the ticket office at 330-672-2244.
