TOLEDO, Ohio – Andy Ravel pitched shutout baseball through seven innings to lead Kent State (9-9, 1-2) to a 1-0 win in the finale at Toledo (8-15, 2-1) on Sunday afternoon.
"It's great, especially when you don't get the success you want in the first two games," said Head Coach Jeff Duncan of the win. "For us to win a really good, fundamental game like that is really important."
Ravel allowed just five hits and walked only one batter while striking out five in the start. Josh Pierce followed with another perfect two innings, not allowing a hit, run or walk while striking out one, to earn the save.
It took some small ball in the 6th inning to break the 0-0 game. Luke Burch led off the inning with a perfectly placed bunt single then stole two bags. Sawyer Polen grounded out for the first out of the inning to allow Burch to score and give the Flashes a 1-0 lead.
"Our whole goal today was to have a really positive attitude and to take care of what we could control because I feel like we didn't do a good job of that yesterday," Duncan added. "We wanted to be really fundamental."
Burch, Dylan Rosa and Conner Simonetti each had two hits on the day. Zarley Zalewski had the team's only extra-base hit, a double in the first inning. Luca Fuscardo had two sacrifice bunts in the contest.
Kent State continues its spring break trip with two midweek games. The team travels to Purdue for a 5:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday and then on to a 4:00 p.m. game with Illinois on Wednesday.
