KENT, Ohio – Kent State (10-11, 1-3) outhit Eastern Michigan (9-14, 2-2) in the series opener and rallied late, but ultimately could not come up with the win, falling 4-3 on Friday afternoon.
Nick Jensen-Clagg set a new career high in strikeouts with 11, including seven in the first three innings, but suffered the loss.
The Eagles had a single and homerun in the 2nd inning to take the lead then added on one in the 4th and one in the 8th to total four on the day.
The Golden Flashes scored their first in the 5th when Luke Burch singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Sawyer Polen.
Eastern Michigan's starting pitcher threw 8.1 innings before Kent State removed him from the game with two base hits in the 9th. After the Eagles' closer came in, Curtis Olvey doubled both runners home in the next at-bat to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Two walks by Burch and Polen loaded the bases for a chance to even the score or take the game, but a strikeout ended the contest.
Burch, Polen and Olvey all had two hits on the day as Kent State had nine and Eastern Michigan finished with seven.
Jensen-Clagg went 6.2 innings with five hits, three runs, two walks and 11 strikeouts. Dan Kopcak let in a run on two hits and one walk while striking out three in 2.1 innings of work.
The two teams will finish out the series on Sunday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
