KENT, Ohio – Nick Jensen-Clagg and Dan Kopcak shutout Ball State (21-11, 7-3) Friday night as Kent State (18-11, 7-3) won its eighth-straight game in a 3-0 series-opening victory.
The Cardinals were not able to get a hit off Jensen-Clagg until the 4th inning and ended with just four on the night as the starter improved to 6-3 on the season while striking out five and walking three. Kopcak earned his second save this season as he threw 2.1 innings in relief with one hit and four strikeouts.
The Golden Flashes had two hits in the 1st inning and two hits in the 2nd inning but weren't able to break through until the three-run 3rd. Ball State's starter Plesac was sharp in his outing as he pitched a complete game, but struggled with command a bit in the 3rd. Luca Fuscardo started the inning with a base hit and Dylan Rosa followed with another single to put two on. Sawyer Polen then hit into a fielder's choice to keep runners on first and second and record the first out. Tommy Monnot loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch and Conner Simonetti was also hit to score the first run. Curtis Olvey came up with the big blow of the game, singling up the middle to make it a 3-0 contest.
Olvey was the only Kent State batter to pick up multiple hits as nine were scattered throughout the order. Monnot and Simonetti both hit for extra bases with a double each.
The two teams meet again on Saturday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
