KENT, Ohio – Eric Lauer totaled a career-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings with just one earned loss but suffered the 4-2 loss as Kent State (18-12, 7-4) only had four hits against Ball State (22-11, 8-3) Saturday night.
The Golden Flashes had the lead to start the game when Dylan Rosa homered in the leadoff spot to go up 1-0. However, the Cardinals brought three home in the 4th to get ahead. Two of the runs in the inning came unearned after an error. The runs were the first Ball State was able to score against Kent State in twenty-straight innings, dating back to the first inning of the meeting in the Mid-American Conference Tournament last season.
Kent State closed the gap to make it a 3-2 game in the 5th when a sacrifice fly by Rosa scored Olvey who had walked earlier in the inning. Ball State scored its fourth run on a wild pitch in the 9th to make it a 4-2 final.
Lauer allowed only five hits and one walk to compliment his one earned run and 11 strikeouts. Josh Pierce was sharp in relief, allowing the run on the wild pitch, but allowing just one hit and walking one while striking out three in 2.0 innings.
Rosa had the team's two RBI. The four hits were scattered throughout the order.
The rubber-match is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Schoonover Stadium.
