PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It took just one swing of the bat to decide a pitchers' duel Tuesday night as Kent State (20-12) escaped with a 1-0 win from Pittsburgh (14-21).
Conner Simonetti hit a solo shot to the opposite field in the 7th for the Golden Flashes' first hit of the day and only run in the game.
The Panthers put a runner on third with one out in the 9th, but a play at the plate on a bunt attempt recorded the second out of the inning and kept Pittsburgh off the board.
Jared Skolnicki went 6.2 shutout innings in the start with six hits, one walk and five strikeouts. Dan Kopcak was great in 1.1 innings of relief with one walk and three strikeouts. Josh Pierce earned his second save of the season by throwing the 9th inning with no hits.
Kent State will travel to Youngstown State on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. The team will then return home to host Ohio in a Mid-American Conference series this weekend.
