KENT, Ohio – Tim DalPorto stepped up to go 4-for-4 with three RBI on Sunday to help lead Kent State (21-15, 9-6) to a 9-2 victory in the series finale with Ohio (22-15, 8-7).
The win put starter Andy Ravel at a perfect 5-0 in conference games this season with a minuscule 1.65 ERA.
Tommy Monnot gave the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead with one swing of the bat in the 2nd as he led off the bottom of the inning with a solo shot to left. The Bobcats tied the game in the next frame with an unearned run after an error extended the inning.
Ohio got in front by a run in the 5th when a leadoff walk came around to score on a single. But it was Kent State's turn to tie it as Curtis Olvey and DalPorto smacked back-to-back doubles.
Tied 2-2, the game broke open with a four-run bottom of the 6th inning. It started with a full-count walk by Zarley Zalewski before Monnot was hit by a pitch and Conner Simonetti singled a run home. Olvey was then hit to load the bases. DalPorto came up clutch once again with a base hit up the middle to score two. A double by Dylan Rosa later in the inning scored Olvey to make it a 6-2 game.
The Golden Flashes tacked on two more in the next frame that started the same way, with a Zalewski walk. He advanced to third on a groundout and balk before coming home on a double by Jeff Revesz. Olvey followed with a RBI base hit.
Kent State scored its ninth and final run in the 8th on Rosa's second double of the day and a bases loaded walk with Monnot at the plate.
Ravel finished the day after 6.1 innings with eight hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and one strikeout. The win improved him to 6-1 on the season. Jared Skolnicki threw 2.2 shutout, hitless innings with one walk and two strikeouts.
DalPorto led the team with three RBI on three singles and a double. He also was sharp on defense, including a diving stop and perfect throw from the knees to rob a Bobcats' base hit in the 8th. Olvey also had a big day, going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
The Golden Flashes will host Penn State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before hitting the road for their next conference series at Miami next weekend.
