Kent State Can't Overcome Early, Big Deficit

KENT, Ohio – Kent State (21-16) fell into a deep hole in the first inning Tuesday night and was not able to work its way out of it as Penn State (13-23) scored nine in the opening frame en route to a 15-5 victory.
The nine runs in the frame came on four hits, three errors, four walks and one hit batter for the Nittany Lions.
The Golden Flashes worked their way back to make it a 9-4 game at the end of three. They scored one in the 1st on RBI double by Zarley Zalewski. Three came home in the 3rd on back-to-back homeruns by Conner Simonetti and Curtis Olvey, both to deep parts of the ballpark.
However, Penn State would keep the runs coming in, as they scored two more in the 5th, one in the 6, two in the 7th and their final of the game in the 9th to make it 15 total on 15 hits.
Kent State tallied its final run in the 8th when Tommy Monnot was hit by a pitch and scored on an Olvey single later in the inning.
John Birkbeck suffered the loss as the starter in the contest. Seven other Golden Flashes saw time on the mound in relief.
Olvey finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. He was the only hitter in the lineup with a multi-hit day as the team totaled six hits. Simonetti also had two RBI on his homerun.
The team will pick up conference play on the road this weekend at Miami. Game times are set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
