OXFORD, Ohio – Nick Jensen-Clagg dominated on the mound while the Kent State (22-16, 10-6) offense brought some power to Miami (8-30, 6-10) resulting in a series-opening 4-3 win.
The RedHawks were able to get on the board first in the 4th inning on a single and two-out homerun to left field. The Golden Flashes answered back quickly with a two-run 5th. They also did damage with two outs, as Tim DalPorto singled, Luca Fuscardo reached on a fielding error and Dylan Rosa came up with a big double to left field.
Kent State used the long ball to get in front in the next inning. Tommy Monnot put the first pitch he saw over the left field wall to take a 3-2 lead. Conner Simonetti followed up with a bomb to dead center, over the 400-foot marker, to increase the KSU lead to 4-2. It was the second-straight game the Golden Flashes hit back-to-back homeruns and brought the season total to 25, matching the total from last year.
Miami scored once more in the bottom of the 6th, but would get no closer as Jensen-Clagg seemed to be more dominant as the game went on. He struck out two to end the 6th, got a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th, got help from a double-play ball as he needed just eight pitches in the 8th and then struck out the first two batters of the ninth.
After a walk took Jensen-Clagg out of the game, Josh Pierce came in to strikeout the final batter for the save and a team victory. Jensen-Clagg allowed just six hits and three runs in his 8.2 innings on the mound with two walks and ten strikeouts.
Monnot finished 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored while Simonetti and Rosa both went 2-for-4.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday for another 6 p.m. start.
