OXFORD, Miss. – The Golden Flashes posted the second-lowest three-round score in program history while Josée Doyon tied the lowest individual score in a three-round event to finish the Rebel Intercollegiate in 2nd place as a team as Doyon took top honors individually.
Kent State shot a final round of 277, 11-under par to jump up the leaderboard and finish the event in second place at 3-under total. The total score of 861 ties the second-best three-round total in women's golf history, matching the total set at the Stanford Intercollegiate in 2011.
Texas A&M won the event at 6-under. Top 15 teams Tennessee and Furman finished in 3rd and 4th place respectively. Kent State beat Tennessee by eight strokes.
"I was extremely happy with the way they played today," said Head Coach Greg Robertson. "I thought it was our best single-round performance all year. It was very encouraging to see how many birdies they made and how they played the par fives."
Doyon finished with a final round of 4-under to finish the tournament atop the leaderboard at 8-under with a total of 208. She beat the runner-up by five strokes. Her three-round total score ties Martina Gavier as the lowest in KSU history; Gavier shot that during the 2010-11 season.
"I was so proud of Josée's play in all three rounds," Robertson said. "It was exciting to see her get her first win in such a dominant way."
Wad Phaewchimplee also had a good finish, tying for 3rd place with a 214 after a final round of 4-under. Jennifer Ha shot even to sit in a tie for 25th place. Maddy Mullins had a great final round, shooting 3-under to all finish in a tie for 25th. Natalie Goodson shot 6-over on the day to be tied for 63rd place.
As a team, the Golden Flashes' shot 1-under on par three scoring on Sunday. They were the third best team on par fours and the second best team on par fives at 5-under. They also tied for the second-most pars and had 18 birdies on the final day. The team has one more event before vying for their record-setting 17th-straight Mid-American Conference championship April 24-26. They will travel to Columbus for the Lady Buckeye Invitational April 18-19.
