
Golden Flashes Edged by Catamounts, 1-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Kent State women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by the University of Vermont in the first day of the TD Bank Classic. The loss dropped the Golden Flashes to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Catamounts improved to 2-1-0.
"I am extremely disappointed in our first half performance," said Head Coach Rob Marinaro. "However, we gave a much better effort in the second, but we need to expect more from ourselves for 90 minutes."
Vermont freshman Casey Garfinkel tallied the lone goal just 14 minutes into the first period. Sophomore Sarah Martin earned a free kick that deflected off a Kent State defender and Garfinkel was there to get one past Kent State goalkeeper Katie Kingsbury.
Junior Jenna Hellstrom had a great chance to even the score in the 23rd minute, but her flick past UVM goalkeeper, Ally Ramos, went wide.
In the 32nd minute, Kent State's Kingsbury exited the game due to injury, but senior defender Madison Helterbran stepped in and made her collegiate debut between the pipes. Kingsbury made two saves in her 31:42 in goal.
Just before the half, sophomore Mackenzie Lesnick had a great look from the top of the 18-yard box but it was straight at Ramos.
In the first 45 minutes, Vermont outshot Kent State 6-3 and led 3-1 in corner kicks.
The Flashes' picked up the intensity after the intermission and had some good looks on the Vermont goal but could not connect.
In the 60th minute, Hellstrom went one on one with the Vermont keeper but her shot missed wide. Vermont countered just two minutes later, but Helterbran came up with a great save to keep Kent State deficit to one. In the 82nd minute, Donavan Capehart tried to score the equalizer but Ramos picked up another save.
Vermont ended the night leading 14-10 in shots, but Kent State won the corner kick battle, 5-4. Ramos earned the win in net and earned seven saves, and Kingsbury was given the loss. Helterbran tallied six saves for the Golden Flashes after 58:18 in net.
Kent State will now play New Hampshire at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6.
