KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan (10-6, 2-2) proved to be too much for Kent State (3-11, 0-4) Wednesday night as the Flashes fell 73-52 at University Arena.
The Broncos shot out of the opening tipoff, making their first three shots and forcing two turnovers to go up 7-0 before the Golden Flashes were able to get a shot off. But, that momentum was just as quickly stifled in the early going as Kent State followed up with a 6-0 run to bring the game within one.
A nice inside move by Jordan Korinek gave the Flashes their first lead with two minutes to play in the first quarter, making it a 14-13 game. Western Michigan snuck back in to have a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The tide switched yet again to start the second, as Kent State entered the media break making just one of its last five field goal attempts and found itself down 27-18. Western Michigan went on to shoot 52.9% in the first half, including a 9-for-9 performance from Miracle Woods, to lead 43-25 at the halfway point.
The Broncos remained ahead throughout the third, and despite more than a three-minute scoring drought to close out the period, led 56-37 with ten minutes left in the game.
The Golden Flashes put together a 10-0 run in the 4th, forcing five Broncos turnovers in a 3:26 span as they tried to fight back into the game. However, the Western Michigan advantage proved to be too large as they cruised on to a 73-52 victory.
The home team went on to shoot 48.3% in the game. Kent State did not make a three-pointer, going 0-14; it was the first time a trey was not sunk since November 29, 2014 when the Golden Flashes went 0-for-4 from the outside. Western Michigan won the battle on the boards 73-52 while both teams totaled 38 points in the paint.
Korinek scored 15 with eight rebounds to lead the team. Larissa Lurken finished with 14 points and five steals while Tyra James netted points.
The Golden Flashes remain on the road as they travel to Eastern Michigan for a 4:30 p.m. game on Saturday.
