OXFORD, Ohio – Friday's game between Mid-American Conference juggernauts Kent State and Miami was all it was billed up to be, as the Flashes prevailed 2-1 in overtime to improve to 9-5 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Miami now sits at 8-6 and 3-1.
The scoring started as the RedHawks landed a straight shot on a penalty corner at 16:18. However, the Flashes did not quit. Alison Harmatz tied things less than ten minutes later off a pass from Jessica Nesbitt.
The next 35 minutes period remained scoreless despite eight corner opportunities for Miami. Kent State's formidable defense stepped up as they have all season long and stifled those eight opportunities.
Once overtime started, the Flashes found themselves down a player right from the get-go as Harmatz received a green card. However, she came right back on to the field and made things happen. Dribbling down on the right right side, Harmatz fed Shannon Talbot. The Miami keeper slid out to make a save, but the ball trickled past and Talbot dove to send it into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Shots ended up 10-9 in favor of Miami as they also had nine corners to Kent State's two. Andrea Rinehart had two saves in goal as the RedHawks only managed three shots on cage.
The Golden Flashes now travel to No. 7 Louisville on Sunday for a match at noon.
