KENT, Ohio- It was a high-scoring affair for Kent State soccer as they took down Western Michigan 5-1 Sunday afternoon inside Dix Stadium. The Flashes picked up their eighth consecutive win, improving to 8-1-0 (4-0 MAC) on the year, while the Broncos drop to 8-4-0 (2-2 MAC). Senior Jenna Hellstrom recorded career assists 28 and 29, setting a new Kent State record.

The first of Kent State's five goals came 14:11 into game on a penalty kick by senior Abbie Lawson. The penalty kick resulted from Hellstrom being taken down in the box, a foul that warranted a red card for Western Michigan's Stephanie Heber. For Lawson, it's her first goal of the year and fourth of her career.

The Golden Flashes would add their second goal in the 49th minute as Hellstrom played the ball into the box to Kristen Brots who controlled the ball and slotted it passed the keeper for her third goal of the season. The assist by Hellstrom gave her the Kent State record.

Western Michigan got one goal back on a penalty kick in the 65th minute by Liz Abro following a hand ball by the Golden Flashes in their own box.

Kent State answered quickly, getting a goal from Hayden Pascoe in the 72nd minute. Once again Hellstrom would play a cross into the box that Pasoce got on the end of and put it in the net.

The Golden Flashes notched their fourth and fifth goals just under a minute and a half apart with the first goal coming in the 79th minute. Jaime Eiben got out wide on the left side of the 18-yard box and played the ball to Donavan Capehart who headed it into the back of the net.

Kent State earned a corner kick in the 80th minute which played by Dominique DiNardo to Paige Culver who met it with her head and put it in the net for her first goal of the year.

The Kent State defense turned in another brilliant effort, only allowing one shot on goal for the game.

Kent State soccer returns to action Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. as they travel to rival Akron to battle the Zips for a point in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge.
