KENT, Ohio- Kent State soccer clinched at least a share of the Mid-American Conference East Division Regular Season Championship on Thursday with a 3-0 shutout of the Miami Redhawks from Dix Stadium. With the win, the Golden Flashes move to 11-1-2 (7-0-2 MAC) and improve their unbeaten streak to 13 matches, a new program record. The Redhawks fall to 8-6-2 (5-2-2 MAC) with the loss.
The Golden Flashes pressured the Miami defense early the game, controlling most of the possession resulting in six corner kicks and three shots on goal in the first 16 minutes of the match.
Kent State's constant pressure led to a breakthrough in the 23rd minute as Hayden Pascoe possessed a deflected header and played it to Jenna Hellstrom who ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box and passed the diving Miami keeper.
The Golden Flashes defense once again proved to be a problem for the opposing offense, not allowing Miami to get off a shot in the first half, giving Kent State the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Kent State controlled much the possession early on in the second half and made the most of a misplayed ball by Miami's keeper in the 57th minute. Pascoe played a bouncing ball into the box that ended up bouncing over the keeper's head to Hellstrom who chipped the ball into the net for second goal of the match. With two assists, Pascoe's assist total for the season is now at five, while Hellstrom's goal total is at 12.
Sophomore Dominique DiNardo would get in on the scoring in the 77th minute following some skilled passing by Paige Culver and Donavan Capehart. Culver got the play started with a free kick from behind mid-field that Capehart got on the end of and flicked the ball into the box where DiNardo tracked it down and beat the charging keeper for her first career goal.
Kent State would stifle the Miami attack for the remainder of the match only allowing six total shots.
Goalie Ashleah McDonald would make two saves en route to her second consecutive shutout and fifth of the season.
The Golden Flashes' convincing win was a result of their advantage of Miami in corner kicks (12-3), shots (20-6) and shots on goal (10-2).
The Golden Flashes have another crucial MAC match this Sunday as they host Ball State at 1 p.m. from Dix Stadium.
