AURORA, Ohio – The No. 18 Kent State men's golf team wrapped up a record-setting performance Tuesday, winning the Cleveland State Invitational at the Barrington Golf Club with a score of 46-under par 818 (270-271-277).
The Golden Flashes' score beats the previous 54-hole tournament record, set at the Irish Creek Invitational in spring 2012, by seven strokes. Kent State won the tournament by 44 strokes, with only two other teams finishing under par. The team has now shot under 830 in back-to-back tournaments after previously finishing under that mark once in program history.
Individually, two Flashes reset the bar for a low round in a 54-hole tournament. Ian Holt and Chase Johnson became the first golfers in program history to shoot under 200 for the tournament at 198 and 199, respectively. The previous best marks were set during the 1999-2000 season by current coaches in Ben Curtis (200) and Jon Mills (202).
For the third straight tournament, Holt led Kent State, this time taking his first tournament title. He shot a 67 Tuesday to finish at 18-under par. Holt logged four birdies and an eagle on the 11th hole. Holt is on a tear and making national waves, with seven straight rounds of 70 or better.
Johnson finished the tournament at 17-under par over three rounds, including his record breaking second round of 63. He shot a 70 on Tuesday, with his second eagle of the weekend on the fifth hole.
While the team's 54-hole performance is the best in history, it could have been even greater. Kent State's third and fourth best golfers competed as individuals and did not count towards the team's score. Chris Doody finished tied for fourth overall with a score of eight-under par 208. He matched his first round score of 68 on Tuesday. Spencer Dobbs came in sixth at seven-under par 209. He shot a 71 Tuesday, with an eagle on the par-4 13th hole.
Kent State's last two counted scores came from Josh Whalen and Gisli Sveinbergsson. Both finished tied for seventh at five-under par 211. Whalen had his best round of the tournament Tuesday with a 68, while Sveinbergsson registered an on par 72. Of the 36 rounds that counted towards Kent State's overall score, only one was over par.
Tied for 18th overall was Bjarki Petursson, who finished at one-over par 217. He shot a 75 Tuesday to finish his week. Nick Montes finished tied for 28th at six-over par 222. He had his best round of the week Tuesday at 70. Tyler McHugh finished tied for 47th at 228, registering a Tuesday score of 77. Chase Parker wrapped up the field at 232 in 58th place. He repeated his second round score of 78 on Tuesday.
The men's golf team will follow up its record performance by competing in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough, Tennessee beginning Oct. 14.
