BRADENTON, Fla. – Kent State women's golf made history on Tuesday as it won its fourth consecutive tournament for the first time in program history. The Golden Flashes captured the Mid-American Match Play Challenge title by beating Northern Illinois 3-2 in the semifinals and Eastern Michigan 4-1 in the final round.
"It was great to get a win to start the spring season," said Head Coach Greg Robertson. Â "I was happy with the way they played and competed. We saw a lot of good things out of each player and we also found some things we can work on. We'll get back to work when we get home before we head to Puerto Rico in a few days."
In the semifinal match, Josée Doyon and Amira Alexander both won 4&3 while Wad Phaewchimplee won 2 up to lead the team to the next round. Michaela Finn and Taylor Kim both finished at 1 down.
The Golden Flashes grabbed the win in the final round over the Eagles as four players won their matches. Doyon finished 2 up, Finn 6&5, Kim 5&3 and Phaewchimplee 6&4. Alexander was 1 down before her match was called because the team had already clinched a victory.
The tournament makes it four team wins in a row as Kent State won its last three events to end the fall season, giving them a No. 7 national ranking. The only other time the Golden Flashes won three-straight events was in the 2002 season. Four consecutive wins is a new high mark for the program.
The team will look to continue on its current streak when it competes in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic February 14-16.
