KENT, Ohio – Kent State (6-21, 3-14) held off Miami (9-19, 3-14) on Wednesday night to end its home season with a 59-53 victory.
The first quarter was a game of runs, as the Golden Flashes struck first, going 7-0 during an early stretch made in part by five-straight points from Jordan Korinek. The RedHawks then answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 11.
Larissa Lurken drained a three with less than a minute remaining in the opening period to give Kent State a 15-12 lead at the end of the first.
Out of the break, Miami brought the lead within three points as they scored six unanswered. Korinek quickly quieted that spurt with jump shot and old-fashioned three-point play.
The RedHawks worked back to tie the game at 37 but Korinek replied, making a layup and hitting the foul shot at the line to put the Golden Flashes back up 40-37 at the end of the third.
In the final quarter, Miami was able to tie the game at 41 before Tyra James broke that with a layup. Korinek added in yet another and-one to grow the Flashes' advantage to four.
Down the stretch, Kent State connected at the charity stripe, making 13 in the fourth to stay ahead and take the victory.
The Flashes won the rebound margin 38-35 and had nine steals in the game. Lurken finished with a double-double, totaling 14 points and ten rebounds. Korinek was the game's high scorer with 23 points.
Kent State will now travel to Buffalo on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game to end the regular season.
