KOHLER, Wis. – A tough second round has Kent State on the outside looking in with one round remaining at the Kohler NCAA Regional. The Golden Flashes are in a three-way tie for eighth place at the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run, after shooting a 12-over 300 on Tuesday.
The Flashes are six strokes out of the top five, which earns a berth at the NCAA Championships.
"We just didn't execute today," Head Coach Herb Page said. "But we've been able to bounce back on the last day a number of times this year. And I have faith this team can do it again."
Junior Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) and sophomores Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) and Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) each had strong periods throughout the day, but also had moments of struggle.
Whalen was 2-under on the front nine, but went 5-over on the back nine.
Holt went 1-under on the back nine, but settled for a 1-over 73 for the day, that included a triple bogey on the ninth hole. After two rounds, he is tied for 10th at even par.
Johnson was 2-under through the first four holes, before a double bogey slowed his day down. His drive on the fourth hole went into the rough and his ball could not be found despite the help of many. Johnson went 4-over on the day, bumping him back to 28th place for the tournament at 2-over.
"There were three shots I'd really like to have back," Page said of a drive from Holt that led to a triple bogey and shots from Johnson and Whalen that led to double bogeys. "Those three shots cost us seven strokes, but that's golf. Today is over and we've got to get over it."
Freshmen Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) and Bjarki Petursson (Borgarnes, Iceland) each went 4-over on the day with four bogeys.
Wednesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. Eastern for the Flashes with a change of pace, starting on the back nine.
"The competition is steep, but we're good enough to get out," Page said.
