
Soccer Opens Season at Ohio State Friday; Hosts Canisius Sunday

KENT, Ohio- Kent State soccer gets their 2016 season underway this Friday, Aug. 19, as they head to No. 23 Ohio State for a 7 p.m. match-up with the Buckeyes. The Golden Flashes return home to Zoeller Field on Sunday to take on the Canisius Golden Griffins at 1 p.m.

The Golden Flashes are coming off strong exhibition performances in which they defeated Duquesne 3-2 and Cleveland State 4-2. In those two games, senior Jenna Hellstrom scored four goals, including a hat trick against the Vikings. Redshirt junior Donavan Capehart registered a goal in each game, while Hayden Pascoe added a goal and an assist in each contest.
THE MATCHUPS
Ohio State:
• The Buckeyes open up the 2016 regular season ranked No. 23 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
• In the Big Ten preseason coaches' poll, Ohio State was voted to finish fifth behind Penn State, Rutgers, Wisconsin and Michigan.
• Friday's match will mark the sixth contest in program history between Kent State and Ohio State. The Buckeyes own a 4-0-1 record all-time against the Golden Flashes
• These teams last met on Aug. 25, 2006, a match that ended in a 0-0 tie.
Canisius:
• Before making the trip to Kent on Sunday, the Golden Griffins will open up the 2016 season at home against Sacred Heart on Friday afternoon.
• Coming off a 6-11-2 record in 2015, Canisius was picked to finish ninth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
• The Golden Griffins return their top points-scorer from 2015 in junior Taylor Kugler. Kugler tallied four goals and four assists for a total of 12 points.
• In the only other regular season match in program history between these two teams, the Golden Flashes defeated the Canisius 6-1.
