KENT, Ohio – For the first time since 1995, Kent State field hockey starts the season 2-0 after a 4-1 victory over Villanova Saturday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.
The program's method of stocking up on tough competition from the get-go has proven beneficial for the back-to-back conference champion Flashes. Although still early in the season, the team is likely to be just as formidable as they outscored Michigan State and Villanova 7-2 and outshot them 42-17 during the opening weekend.
In Saturday's game, Alison Harmatz got it started early with a goal off an assist from Krysti Lober six minutes into the game. The Wildcats were able to tie things up to make it a 1-1 game at the half.
In the second, the Golden Flashes came out strong, scoring quick and often to put the game out of reach. Three minutes into the half, Lober rifled a shot of in front of the cage after a nice pass and assist from Alexis Madeira. Less then ten minutes later, Harmatz tipped in a pass from Madison Thompson to make it a 3-1 game. Lober joined Harmatz with a two-goal performance when she found the back of the net a few minutes later. Ines Delpech had the assist on the final goal of the match for her first point this season.
Andrea Rinehart was steady once again in cage, saving three of Villanova's shots. The Wildcats were only able to get six shots in the game up against the Kent State defense while the Flashes' attack finished with 22. Harmatz and Lober led the team with five shots each.
Kent State will be back in action Labor Day weekend as they travel across the country to California for three games in four days.
