BERKELEY, Calif. –Kent State (3-0) stayed on top of its game as it earned a 2-0 win over California (0-2) on Friday night.
The first half was devoid of scoring, but the Flashes did not take long to change that after halftime. Less than two minutes into the second, Alison Harmatz dribbled straight in on cage and connected for a 1-0 lead.
Kortney Keller scored the first goal of her career to make it 2-0 as fellow freshman Laila Richter set her up in front of the net for the tally at the 47:28 mark.
Offense wasn't the only story of the game, as keeper Andrea Rinehart recorded her first shutout of the season with two saves in net. The Flashes' defense only allowed six shots from the Bears while firing off 12 on their own end. Kent State also led in corners, 8-6.
The Golden Flashes will continue their California swing when they play No. 11 Stanford on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. EST.
