KENT, Ohio – The No. 16 Kent State University women's golf team will look to keep their momentum strong at the Schooner Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma, at the Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma.
The three-day 54-hole tournament is set to begin Saturday and end with the final round on Monday. The Golden Flashes have competed in the tournament twice, last claiming fourth overall in 2014.
Kent State will measure up against a solid field featuring: Oklahoma, Mississippi State, No. 25 Texas A&M, No. 19 Florida State, Texas State, Clemson, Notre Dame, LSU, Kansas, No. 21 Iowa State and No. 3 Alabama.
The Golden Flashes entered the fall season with a talented but young roster. Despite sending five underclassmen to the first tournament of the fall, the Golden Flashes finished second at the Mercedes-Benz Championship. The season opener was highlighted by a record-breaking collegiate debut from Pimnipa Panthong, who won the tournament with an eight-under par 205. Panthong's score of 205 (67-68-70) was two strokes lower than the 54-hole school and tournament record set by Taylor Kim at the same tournament last year. The solid performances placed the team fourth in the nation by GolfWeek, with Panthong ranking fourth overall as an individual.
The tournament is in conjunction with the Toby Keith Foundation. The foundation's mission is to encourage the health and happiness of pediatric cancer patients and to support OK Kids Korral. OK Kids Korral is a cost-free, convenient and comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment in Oklahoma City.
