KENT, Ohio – Kent State (5-4) dominated the turf on Friday afternoon to beat Ball State (4-5) 3-1 and open Mid-American Conference play on the right side of the win column.
The Cardinals attacked early and scored on their first corner opportunity, a straight shot eleven minutes into the game, to take a 1-0 lead. After the Ball State goal, the Cardinals were not able to get a shot off for the next 53 minutes of play as the ball remained mostly on the Kent State side of the midline.
By halftime, the Golden Flashes evened the match. A corner opportunity allowed Krysti Lober to get a shot on net while Silvia Figa Malgosa was ready and waiting to get the ball into the back of the net.
Kent State was hot out of the break, scoring a 1:36 into the second half and never looking back. Alison Harmatz scored the go-ahead goal as she dribbled in from the top left of the circle for the tally. Later on, Shannon Talbot connected after receiving a pass from Jessica Nesbitt to make it a 3-1 game.
The stat line heavily favored the Flashes, as they outshot the Cardinals 21-7 and had ten corners to Ball State's three.
Conference play continues this weekend as Kent State travels to Longwood on Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. match.
