Three of the last five Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athletes of the Week have been Kent State wrestlers after Chance Driscoll (Aurora, Ohio) earned the honor on Wednesday. The junior 141-pounder recently went 4-0 at the Virginia Duals Jan. 13-14, inside Hampton Coliseum.
An economics major, Driscoll carries a 3.63 cumulative grade point average. Now in his fourth year in the classroom, he is on pace to earn a bachelor's degree in May.
Driscoll helped the Golden Flashes defeat The Citadel with a 7-1 decision over Douglas Gudenburr Saturday. With his team trailing 12-0 to start the dual, Driscoll sparked a string of seven Kent State wins in the final eight matches.
In each of his three matches on Friday, Driscoll put the Flashes on the board. He topped Joshua Heil of Campbell 4-3 in overtime and edged Virginia Tech's Kevin Norstren 3-2. Driscoll started his weekend with a 12-4 major decision over Lewis Williams of Lock Haven. Â
On the year, Driscoll is 17-10 overall and 8-1 in dual meets.
Two weeks ago, redshirt freshman Tim Rooney earned Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week honors. The award went to sophomore Anthony Tutolo in December.
Wednesday also marked the third time this academic year that Kent State swept the weekly conference scholar athlete awards as women's basketball's Jordan Korinek was named MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week. Â
Kent State will host five wrestling duals over the next three weekends beginning Sunday as the Flashes host archrival Ohio at 2 p.m., inside the M.A.C. Center.
