DEKALB, Ill. โ The Kent State soccer team's (10-4-1, 6-1-0 MAC) defense was dominant once again, in a 1-0 shutout win over Northern Illinois (7-6-1, 4-3-0 MAC) at the NIU Soccer Complex in DeKalb. The Golden Flashes remain in first-place in the Mid-American Conference with 18 points.
Kent State added to its league-best nine shutouts, and tied the 2016 MAC Tournament Championship team for the second most in program history.
The lone tally of the match was scored by senior Donavan Capehart in the 25th minute when she launched a cross from the right six yards out and found the back of the net. Senior Hayden Pascoe registered an assist, her third of the campaign.
It's Capehart's first goal of the season, as she missed a bulk of the year with an injury. She is Kent State's sixth all-time leading in goals (22), and moves up to eighth in program history in points (50), and is now tied for fourth in game-winning goals (8).
Kent State's defense was stellar throughout the night and only allowed two Northern Illinois shots on goal. Overall NIU led in shots (12-8), saves (4-2) and corner kicks (5-4).
Senior Katie Kingsbury was called upon to start and performed admirably, facing 12 shots while making two saves in 90 minutes of action. Kingsbury (2-1-0) recorded her second shutout of the season, with the first coming against St. Bonaventure on Aug. 27. NIU's Megan Donnally (1-1-0) made four saves, while facing eight shots and allowed one goal.
The Golden Flashes secured their seventh consecutive 10-win season, and first victory in DeKalb since 2007. The outcome was the same as the 2016 MAC Tournament Championship game when the Flashes won 1-0 to receive the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.
Kent State plays their last regular season road match on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. against Western Michigan.
