KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team (7-9, 4-1 MAC) moved into second place in the Mid-American Conference with a 3-2 home overtime victory over the Longwood Lancers (11-4, 4-2 MAC) Saturday.
Kent State and Longwood were locked in a back and forth battle in which the Golden Flashes played from behind on multiple occasions. A winner could not be decided in 70 minutes, but a Berta Jover Llorens goal in the 73rd minute sealed the match.
Despite a consistent attack in the first half, Longwood struck first and led at the break. The Lancers scored off a rebound in the 23rd minute, taking the first lead of the match.
The Flashes would equalize in the 42nd minute after a penalty corner. Laila Richter would score her first of two goals on the day after receiving a pass in the circle from Jessica Nesbitt. The 1-1 tie would be short lived, as the Lancers scored again in the 44th minute.
Down a goal with 15 minutes remaining, the duo of Richter and Nesbitt once again connected after a penalty corner. Nesbitt recorded the assist and Richter scored her sixth goal of the season, tying Delpech for the team lead. Kent State would take two shot attempts in the final six minutes, but the game would not be decided in regulation.
The Kent State offense controlled the overtime period, recording four shots and two penalty corners without facing an attack from Longwood. The match ended after a Jessica Apelt shot was blocked, but the rebound secured by Jover Llorens. The sophomore scored her first goal of the season to secure the win.
